Memory foam mattresses may seem like a relatively futuristic idea, but the beginnings behind this wonderful technology are even more space age than you may have originally thought. Memory foam, as a concept, was originally formulated by scientists who would usually be spending their time on rocket boosters and and the like. Yes, though it may seem far fetched, NASA originally created memory foam in a bid to assist astronauts cope with the G-Force created during take-off and from the mid-eighties onwards, this marvellous technological feat was used for this purpose only. It took several years before memory foam as we understand it to reach the rest of us, here on planet earth.

Of course, these days, there is a far more down to earth reason for purchasing a super-comfortable slab of this wonderful product, a restful nights sleep. But how exactly does memory foam work? Well, the mixture of substances which go into a memory foam mattress are the key, namely the wonderfully named high-viscosity material called visco-elastic polyurethane. This extraordinary weight-bearing substance is firmer in cool temperatures and softer when warm which helps to formulate the perfect mattress as it will lend itself to the shape of your body. What really sets these products aside however is their ability to distribute your weight on an even scale, thereby keeping you supported rather than simply sinking and consuming your frame.

Though you might have once thought that the closest you could get to outer space would be your dreams, as it turns out, the substance you sleep on is more science-fiction friendly than you may have imagined meaning that your dreams will have a better chance of remaining uninterrupted during a night of relaxing, comfortable sleep. Well, if it’s good enough for Neil Armstrong and company, then it’s good enough for you, no?
